Salam Cinema

I have been watching mark cousins THE STORY OF FILM -AN ODYSSEY.

What an experience.Truly made me see the power of cinema. The guy i was impressed by most was MOHSEN MAKHMALBAF.

What better way to start my adventure than to watch SALAM CINEMA.
This is movie where actors dont know that the audition  they are  giving is actually going to become a movie. So even if they act very badly they are going to be a part of film history. Lucky .
Who else can think of such a beautiful and innovative idea  and so simple than the master of cinema himself.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
The movie is full of interesting incidents. but there is one which moves you the most . A girl came in and talked to mohsen about her lover who left the country and for them to be united again this movie can be a good platform , if she gets slected she might leave iran , beacuse other wise she can not get visa due to country's visa rules.
Many actors came in , director told them to cry if they want to get selected, no one was able to but her.
she only had to think of her love and tears started to flow within 10 seconds.

Looking closely at the Rule of thirds

Rule of third is that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
BUT WHY?
why does they look good when placed at the thirds?
its because of THE GOLDEN RATIO (\varphi)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
IS it totally true? i believe that golden ratio has a lot to do with it. The definition of golden ratio can explain why things look good to eyes.
" if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one"

Beauty is not some  mathematical stuff .It can very well be defined theoretically
Lets explain.
Look at that line again. If someone asks you to divide a line so that it will look beautiful . what will most of us do?  we will cut it in half i suppose. like when our mother used tell us to make our room tidy that what we used to do. keep things in the centre . Divide everything in half so that it looks good.

But Nature and also Artist( painters, sculptors, architects, cinematographers) doesnt follow that.
THIS IS WHAT THEY DO.

They would cut a line in such a way so that smaller part is related to bigger part in a same way the bigger part is in the relation with the whole.
And it lies a bit before or after the half.
That's why they created the rule of thirds as it lies closer to the golden ratio.

There a lot more to explain if we really want to understand golden ratio, as the whole nature is made out of it.

some years back i was obsessed with this formulae . i have a lot to share. will do it some other time . i think this much information is enough to explain the RULE OF THIRDS.
if you have any questions, do ask.

Playing with REDSTAR

I always liked the playful nature of cinema. How by using a simple music and simple tools you can create an experience.  A ear and eyecandy. Animation and motion graphics can give you what camera cannot. thats why painters still exist even after the camera came.
People were afraid that camera may destroy  painting but it gave birth to modern art , 3d animation may destroy 2d hand drawn animation but it cannot. They actually free each other.
it frees painter to play rather than just trying to imitate reality. it frees 2d hand drawn animation from being bounded by perceptive.

Starter

After wasting many years in the animation world, and hopping from one city to another, my lovely wife finally made me realise that i belong to live action . so i quit my job and here i am. Embarking on a new journey of cinema, of zoom and prime lenses,of DSLR(Canon EOS 5D MARK II,III to be exact :)] camera liberating people ,providing people like me with financially viable options.

This blog will be my diary where i will be writing about things i am going to discover .

It will be about  artistic side of cinema, about compositions, about designing sequences , about writing screenplays, about using storyboards, and also about the techi stuff like what things to buy, and how to make filmaking cheaper and still get cinematic look out of it.
